Wednesday 12th June 2019 – The Sport Ireland Campus launched the first Copa Campus Games that saw different national governing bodies and various departments within the campus take on each other in a number of different sports in the hope of being crowned the Copa Campus victors. Sport Ireland Campus Office Staff, Sport Ireland Campus Coaches, Sport Ireland, Special Olympics, Triathlon Ireland and Paralympics Ireland all had teams entered to represent them in the Copa Campus Games.

For the following 6 weeks every Wednesday each team competed against each other in a different sport every week. Every sport that was played gave the chance for the teams to showcase their various sporting abilities, it also gave the competitors the chance to play on some of the state of the art facilities that the Sport Ireland Campus has to offer.

The National Indoor Training Centre was the chosen arena for two of the weeks, during these two weeks the teams were competing in Basketball and Uni-Hock. Both sports displayed a high level of competition between all teams involved. The NITC is a large multi-sports venue, that can be sub-divided into 3 international sized basketball courts. These courts can be adjusted to host 16 other sports that meet international standards. It is also the centre point for our sports and recreation programmes.

The remainder of the games were then played on the National Sports Campus Multi-Sport Pitches. These state of the art all-weather synthetic pitches saw the teams try their hand at soccer, touch rugby, ultimate frisbee and handball, whilst also giving them a chance to bare the lovely Irish weather some days turning out to be nicer than others. Some of these sports gave people the chance to step out of their comfort zone and showcase some of their different athletic abilities.

After an eventful couple of weeks of competition that not only showcased some of the athletic ability that exists but also showed the sportsmanship that is present between all the staff that took part. With some of the games bringing out the competitive nature between the teams we finally had a champion. At the end of it all Sport Ireland were crowned the champions of the first-ever Copa Campus Games.
